DESIGNING BETTER FUTURES: Rethinking strategy for a sustainable world

In Designing Better Futures, Mike McAllum's second book, he describes how we are colliding with a set of trends and disruptions, that signal the end of the Age of Progress. He suggests that our increasing dependence on more and more resources to create value puts us on a collision path with a planet ill equipped to meet such demands. Mike contends that future success will come from redesigning, rethinking, and thus navigating organisations, and communities away from the collision point. Those that do, he argues, will create more sustainable value, and levels of prosperity, than those that don’t. The smart money for individuals, organisations and society is now focused on the race towards an Age of Sustainable Design.

Designing Better Futures: Rethinking Strategy for a Sustainable World

This is a book about these times of turbulence, uncertainty, and rapid change with a difference. It does not fill us with empty utopias nor does it give us an endless litany of bad news; rather, it challenges us to move towards designing better futures.

Focused on cities, and the organizations that inhabit them, it faces head on the many contradictions we face. It gives us insights into how we can think more intelligently and deeply about the future. Among them, why sustainability is inextricably linked with the real economy, how to ensure the development and deployment of responsible and far reaching technologies, and why we should confront the tough questions of equity and access.

Finally, it provides us with examples of organizations who are successfully navigating the rapids and creating a more sustainable future. This is not a journey where we need to walk alone.

"In this wonderful book Michael McAllum unerringly follows a path that may lead us all to wiser decisions and more coherent actions than has previously been the case."
- Richard Hames. Director Asian Foreisght Institute

"If our organizations hope to adapt to and prosper from the profoundly reshaped global markets and patterns of consumer behavior we moving towards at pace, then I can recommend no better investment than a thorough reading and internalization of the principles set forth in this book. - a must read for all of us."
- Peter Carre. Chairman Water Resources Group
